The Battery Shooting Team

The 5th Mass Battery is a unique unit as we are one of a handful of Civil war artillery reenacting units that participates in reenacting and living history events AND field a winning competitive cannon shooting team.  In the 1970’s and 1980’s the 5th Mass Battery was primarily a competitive shooting organization.  The current shooting team profits greatly from the trial and error lessons learned of our first shooters 30 years ago.  The accuracy of our rounds from our three-inch rifles is comparable to a modern rifle.

The Battery casts our projectiles from pure lead and machines them to precise dimensions on a lathe.  Our powder charges are trickle weighed to the nearest gram.  The quality of our projectiles combined with great gunners have brought the Battery first place awards at the 2005 and 2006 American Artillery Association National Matches in Westerlo, New York.  In addition Battery typically conducts one or two practice shooting sessions per year at local gun clubs.
